Deciding on a domain name is very similar to selecting your child's name, before they are born. Your parents decide on your name and it is a name that will stay with you all your life. With naming your domain, you get to give "birth" and choose the name you want your domain to go by. The difference here is that the name you go with for your domain is a one-of-a-kind. Unlike naming a child, once allocated to you, your domain name will never be used elsewhere.
It is important to be very specific in choosing a domain name that is perfect for you. With your own personal name, there is the surname after your first name. The same applies with domain names. You have to decide what you want after the dot. The most readily used is dot com (.com). So, if you want that one, take it quick. Once it is yours, it can never get duplicated by anyone.
What if the domain name chosen has already been taken? When a baby is registered, there is no searching to tell if that name is being used already. When it comes to registering a domain name, the whole globe is fine-tooth-combed to see if that name is registered by someone else. If it has been picked by another, sorry, you must do a bit of changing before it can be registered for you. This is possible by staying with the name and changing the extension, picking a different name and keeping the extension, or changing both the name and the extension. Most important is to not confuse visitors to your domain and have the domain name keep with your identity.
